SECTION II: PART B

SIGHTSINGING

TOTAL TIME: APPROXIMATELY 10 MINUTES

Directions

For each of the melodies, sing the pitches inaccurate pitch and rhythm using a steady, consistent tempo. For each melody you will hear the starting pitch at the beginning of the practice period. You will have 75 seconds to warm-up and practice singing the melody. At the end of the practice time, you will have 30 seconds to perform the melody; A recorded announcement will tell you when it is time to stop practicing and start performing. On the actual exam you will be recording your performance either on cassette tape or as an mp3 file.

During your performance:

  • You may sing solfege syllables (Do-Re-Mi), scale degree numbers (1-2-3), a neutral syllable (for example

la or Da), or note names (C-D-E). You may whistle if you prefer.

  • Even though you will hear the starting pitch you do NOT have to sing it in that key. You may transpose

the melody to a register that is comfortable for you.

  • You should use all of the practice time to sing out loud. You may write on the music if you want to.

  • You may not use any device such as a metronome or any musical instrument to help you in your

     practice or performance.

  • You will be evaluated on pitch accuracy relative to the opening tonic you choose, rhythm, and

continuity—maintaining a steady tempo without hesitating or breaking the flow of the melody. You may

start over if you need to, but there will be a deduction from your score. You are not evaluated on the

    quality of your singing voice.
